National ArithmetEQ Challenge 2014
On Wednesday, 2 July 2014, 3 teams of 2 students each, representing Crescent Girls’ School participated in the National ArithmetEQ Challenge at Yishun Secondary School. The game, similar to the popular scrabble board game, was the brainchild of a group of Mathematics teachers from Yishun Secondary School I 2005. Instead of placing lettered tiles to create words with meanings, players have to form equations from tiles labeled with numbers and mathematical operators. One of our teams, consisting of Lu Thuc Phuong Anh and Pham Thuy Duong from 3S2, emerged champions in the Secondary School category.
Clinching top position was not an easy road. It was not merely a matter of preparing ahead of the competition, but also of balancing these practice sessions and our schoolwork. We had to plan practice sessions and meet up during the June holidays.
On the day of the competition, participants from 32 Singapore secondary schools all gathered, a really overwhelming sight for the both of us. However, thank to the encouragement of our teacher-i- charge, Ms Eugenia Kok, and our teammates, we managed to overcome it and achieve more than what we expected. The trophy and medals mark our achievement and the new friendships that we forged. The process was indeed memorable and enriching for us.
