Asean Age Group Chess Championships
My name is Tan Si Min and I am from class 1G1. In June this year, I represented Singapore in the Asean Age Group Chess Championships held in Chaing Mai, Thailand. It was my first international competition and I was very proud to represent Singapore.
We boarded the flight and arrived in Chiang Mai at around 7pm. When we arrived, we were welcomed by some Thai women who presented us with a garland of flowers. We then boarded the Team Singapore bus which took us to our hotel.
We had games every day, some of which even lasted 4 hours straight. There were three types of games we played: Rapid, Blitz and Standard that lasted 25 minutes, 5 minutes and 4 hours respectively. The whole trip lasted 10 days and I enjoyed myself despite it being very tiring.
Of the many new friends I met, one of them was my opponent from Vietnam. We talked but not much as she could only speak a little English. She is one year older than me and is a Woman Fide Master who has played chess for 8 years.
All in all, I enjoyed myself despite the pressure to win the games. Although I did not win any medals, I gained much valuable experience and it was indeed a worthwhile trip. I learnt that we should not be afraid of challenges and should instead, embrace them. Go for it if you ever face any challenge!
