Mother Tongue Fortnight (Chinese Language)
1 May 2026
Experience various aspect of Chinese languages and culture during the Mother Tongue Fortnight.
This year's Mother Tongue Fortnight was filled with engaging and meaningful activities that allowed students from different levels to experience various aspects of Chinese language and culture. The programmes included a learning journey to Jewel Changi Airport, a Peranakan heritage virtual tour with tile painting, an author book-sharing session, and a tea culture appreciation workshop.
The Secondary 1 students visited Jewel Changi Airport, where they explored one of Singapore's iconic landmarks. This learning journey complemented their Chinese Language syllabus by helping them learn how to describe places in Singapore using vivid details, examples, and factual information.
As a Secondary 2 student, I participated in the Peranakan heritage virtual tour and tile painting workshop. Through the virtual tour, we learnt more about Peranakan culture, including its unique architecture, traditional clothing, and delicious local cuisine. It was fascinating to discover that Singapore has neighbourhoods rich in Peranakan heritage. The tile painting activity allowed us to express our creativity by designing colourful Peranakan-inspired patterns, and it was enjoyable to see the wide variety of creative designs produced by my classmates.
Another memorable experience was the author book-sharing session. We had the opportunity to interact with the author, who was also one of our teachers. She shared her writing journey, the inspiration behind her book, and her experiences with her students. Listening to her personal stories made the session both meaningful and inspiring. It also encouraged us to appreciate reading and writing from a different perspective.
The Secondary 3 students participated in a tea culture appreciation workshop, where they learnt about the history of tea, the different types of tea leaves, the tea trade routes, and the etiquette of traditional Chinese tea appreciation. The workshop helped them gain a deeper understanding of an important aspect of Chinese culture and heritage.
Overall, Mother Tongue Fortnight was an enriching experience for students across all levels. Each activity was thoughtfully planned to deepen our understanding of the Chinese language and culture in an interactive and enjoyable way. I especially enjoyed the Peranakan heritage programme and the author sharing session, as they allowed me to learn beyond the classroom while having fun with my classmates. I am already looking forward to next year's Mother Tongue Fortnight and the exciting activities it will bring.
