Mother Tongue Language Fortnight (Malay Language)
1 May 2026
Experience various aspect of Malay languages, visiting Singapore last kampung and cooking traditional kueh during the Mother Tongue Fortnight.
During Mother Tongue Language Fortnight, I had the opportunity to take part in many fun and meaningful activities that deepened my appreciation for the Malay language and culture. We made our own badges and created a traditional bunga telur, using candy instead of eggs to give this cultural practice a fun and modern twist. We also enjoyed a radio invasion by RIA 89.7, where we played games, learnt more about the Malay language and culture, and picked up useful tips on speaking with confidence and clarity.
Another highlight was our visit to Kampong Buangkok, Singapore’s last kampong. There, I learnt about the simple way of life in the past and gained a greater appreciation for our cultural heritage. The kueh-making session was also an enjoyable experience, as I learnt how to make different traditional Malay kuehs while discovering more about their history and significance.
Through creative writing, traditional idioms and hands-on activities, the programme showed me that learning a mother tongue can be both meaningful and enjoyable. More importantly, it taught me not only about the Malay language, but also how to appreciate and love it. I truly enjoyed the activities and was grateful to share these memorable experiences with my mother tongue classmates.
