It was a balmy weekday evening at the School of Physical education swimming pool. A group of students were interviewing a couple who were probably in their early forties. Another group was taking digital photographs of a tanned, well-built man who was shouting encouragement to a group of swimmers gliding almost elegantly through the water. A young lady was in the pool pacing one of the slower swimmers, trying to push her harder. The group of students were from Crescent Girls' School. The couple they were interviewing are parents of one of the members of the Singapore Special Olympics swimming team. The young man works for a major accounting firm and is a volunteer coach. The young lady is from Knowledge Village. It is hard to keep a dry eye. Here's a community that Singapore can be proud of and is the reason why I am proud to be a Singaporean. The results of that evening's event can be viewed at this website. I want to acknowledge the enthusiasm with which the leadership of Crescent Grils' School and her learning community take to this challenge of combining IT and community service into a curriculum-based activity. To all the athletes, volunteers and coaches of the Singapore Special Olympics Committee, my sincerest thanks for teaching me about bravery and competing against seemingly unsurmountable odds. I am convinced Special Olympics is just a beginning, a stepping stone that would enable all of you to SOAR to greater heights in your future endeavours. |
