Dr Wee Kim Wee

Mr. Wee Kim wee was elected the 4th President of the Republic of Singapore by Parliament in 1985.

He was Born on the 4th November 1915. Mr. wee had a fruitful career in the in the news media. He has reported important and fruitful reports throughout his entire career except for the 3.5 yr. during the Japanese Occupation of Singapore and 10.5 years as the high commissioner to Japan and the Republic of Korea in Tokyo.

One of the examples was when he covered the civil war in Belgium Congo (Now Zaire). He was also the first Singapore journalist to enter Jakarta during the confrontation and interviewed Lieutenant - General Suharto when president Sukarno was still confined to the palace in Bogor.

Through his reports, Malaysians & Singaporeans were able to learn for the first time that Indonesia was keen to end the confrontation. Mr. Wee was also an active sportsman in his younger days. He played badminton,table-tennis,basketball and soccer. He was also junior singles badminton champion in Singapore.

He was offered the post of High Commissioner to Malaysia in 1973, 2 years before he was due to retire from The Straits Times.The post was suppose to last 3 years but he stayed for 7 years instead.

Mr. Wee was also a member of the Singapore delegation to the United Nations general assembly in 1977.

He was appointed Ambassador to Japan in September 1980 & co-currently Ambassador to the Republic of Korea with effect from Feb 1981.

In 1966, Mr. Wee was appointed the Justice of Peace. He was Awarded the Public Service Star in 1963 and the Meritorious service for his diplomatic services in 1979.
