
Mr Ong Teng Cheong
Mr Ong Teng Cheong became
the 5th president of Singapore and the 1st president to be elected
by the people of the Republic of Singapore on 1st September 1993 .
He was born in 1936 (64 years
old now).
He entered school late because
of the Japanese Occupation. nevertheless, He was an outstanding student. he enrolled in
the Unoversity of Adelaide after completing his secondary education and was Awarded the
Bachelor of Architecture in 1961.
he Acquired his post-graduate
degree of master of Civic design (town planning) from the University of Liverpool in the
U.K in 1967.
Mr Ong was elected -and served-
as a member of Parliament for 21 yrs ever since 1972.
he was Appointed Senior Minister
of State for Communications in 1975 and Subsequently, communication, culture and labour
portfolios and also (in 1973) Minister without portfolio when he joined the labour
movement as its' elected Secretary-General.
he was 2nd deputy
prime minister from 1985 to 1990. he also held the position of Deputy prime minister in
Goh Chok Tongs government from nov 1990 - aug 1993.
he resigned from the people's
action party (PAP) in august 1993 to stand for the Presidential election.
