Architecture
the istana is sited on top of a hill. the top of the hill was levelled to obtain a suitable planteau. this magnificent building is 3 storeys tall and it stands 140m above sea level.
before the tall skyscrapers of the central business district blocked the view, it was possible to see the indonesian islands to the south; and to the north, the hills of johore -on a clear day.
it was designed in 18th century neo-palladian style. the istana was designed and built by major john frederick adolphus mcnair.
it was built by indian convict labour from bencoolen in sumatra and they were paid 3 to 7 times more than the local coolies; because they were more skilled in plumbing, painting and carpentry work. they even worked as stone masons and opearated the kilns. it was believed they were the same ones who also built the st. andrew's cathedral.
