The American Sarkies brothers carved a highly-visible
niche in Asia's hotel business. The eldest, Martin, was the pioneer, opening the Eastern
& Oriental Hotels in Penang in the early 1880s. Tigran nurtured Raffles Hotel and
Raffles Tiffin Rooms in Singapore while Aviet guided the Strand in Rangoon. When Martin
retired in the early 1890s, Arshak, the youngest, succeeded him at the
E & O.
The only known photograph of the four brothers together (below) comes from Mrs Emily Marcar, granddaughter of Martin Sarkies. It was probably taken in 1905 and shows from left-Aviet, Arshak, Martin (seated) & Tigran.
