It may be possible to use a gene therapy to treat
baldness in future.
University of Pennsylvania researchers managed to get growing hu-
man hairs to take up genetic material- and said that it was easier
than they exppected.
So far, they have only turned hair blue. But they say the idea could
be turned to growing hair some day.
The idea gehind gene therapy is to use genetic material to replace
a faulty gene, or boost the efforts of genes. It is being tested in a
range of conditions from cancer to heart failure.
The researchers thought they would try it for a range of hairloss,
including alopecia areata, caused when the body's immune system
attacks the hair follicles mistakenly. --REUTERS
