b) Add an equal volume of dilute nitric acid or dilute hydrochloric acid to the mixture in (a)
Observation White ppt. remained insoluble. Effervescence occurred. White ppt. dissolved to form colourless solution. Pungent gas evolved decolourised acidified potassium manganate(VII).
Ionic equation  

SO32- (aq) + 2H+ (aq)
----->   SO2 (aq) + H2O (l)
