Laboratory Session 2: Test for Cations

A second batch of unknown solids were dissolved in deionised water and a sample of each of the chemical solutions was analysed in the laboratory.

In this laboratory session, you are required to distinguish the different solutions by testing for the cations and identifying the cations present in each solution.

You are required to:

1. Read all instructions and procedures given carefully, study the digital
   images or video clips for each experiment.
2. Record your observations in the Virtual Laboratory Experience 2 worksheet
   provided.
3. From your observations, make relevant deductions to the nature of the unknown substance or the identity of the substance as given in the instructions.
4. Write ionic equations for the chemical reaction that has occurred in each experiment.
5. The duration of this laboratory trial is 45 minutes.
