Laboratory Session 1: Preliminary
Test
The marine police was alerted to
a suspicious cargo ship near the coast of Changi. During
the raid of this ship, officers found bags of white
solids and coloured solids. In order to arrest the importers
of these solids, the police had to accurately identify
each of the unknown solids. All the samples seized were
sent to the laboratory for analysis.
In this laboratory session, you
are required to make a preliminary examination on the
first 10 samples of the unknown solids sent to the laboratory.
You are required to make an observation of the colour
and texture of the solids and predict the likely cations
and anions present in each solid.
You are required to:
- Read all instructions and procedures
given carefully, study the digital
images or video clips for each experiment.
- Record your observations in the
Virtual Laboratory Experience 1 worksheet
provided.
- From your observations, make
relevant deductions to the nature of the unknown substance
or the identity of the substance as given in the instructions.
- Complete the analysis in 30 minutes.
