Introduction

You have just graduated with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and applied for the position of analytical chemist in a newly established chemical company specialising in testing services, research and development.

You have shown a keen interest to assist the analytical laboratory in the testing of the chemical nature and composition of chemical samples from a wide spectrum of industries. The information you gathered in experiments and analysis will be used to develop new products, for quality control and to refine manufacturing processes.

Task

Being one of the suitable candidates, you are required to go through a battery of six virtual laboratory analysis trials before you can be selected for the final interview.

Your proficiency in qualitative analysis, ability to make observations and proper records, and knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of substances are put to the test.

In order to qualify, you are required to complete all six laboratory analysis sessions and laboratory reports on the unknown chemical substances assigned.

Resources

The company's analytical department website:
http://10.172.14.248/cgs/Webpages/Welcome.htm

Process:

  1. Once you have entered the company, proceed to the Virtual ChemLab.

  2. There are six laboratory trials each beginning with a laboratory training
manual. Read through the laboratory briefing in detail and study
    the experiments given carefully.

  3. When you have completed the briefing, proceed to the analysis lab
for the actual laboratory trial where the unknown samples are tested.

Evaluation

At the end of each laboratory trial, a complete laboratory report with all observations and deductions recorded should be submitted before you proceed to the next laboratory trial.

The candidate should demonstrate the ability to:

  1. make accurate and relevant observations
  2. make precise and accurate records
  3. analyse and deduce the nature of the unknown substances given
  4. identity of the unknown chemical species given
  5. understand the chemical reactions underlying the experiments
  6. represent the chemical reactions in the experiments by writing chemical and ionic equations.

Conclusion

When you have completed the whole series of laboratory trials, you would have a hands-on experience of the work of an analytical chemist in the research and testing laboratories. You would gain a better insight of the strategies of qualitative analysis used to test for unknown chemical substances. You would also have an understanding of the real world application of chemistry and the wide spectrum of substances that can be analysed by qualitative analysis.
