Thermal Decomposition

1. Thermal decomposition of Copper(II) carbonate

Let us look at the earlier example of copper(II) carbonate.

Before heating, copper(II) carbonate is a green powder. When copper(II) carbonate is heated, it undergoes thermal decomposition to produce:

  1. a black powder, copper(II) oxide, and
  2. a colourless gas, carbon dioxide, which formed a white precipitate with limewater.

Chemical equation: CuCO3 (s)     ----->     CuO (s) + CO2 (g)
