Action of Heat

2. Thermal Dissociation

In thermal dissociation, a single compound breaks down on heating to form two or more simpler compounds. On cooling, the products recombine in cooler regions of the apparatus to form back the original compound.
Thermal dissociation is a reversible reaction

For example:

NH4Cl (s)
heat
----->
<-----
cool
NH3 (g) + HCl (g)

When ammonium chloride is heated, it breaks up to form ammonia gas and hydrogen chloride which recombines on the cooler sides of the test tube to form a ring of white ammonium chloride crystals.
