Action of Heat

There are three main chemical reactions that can occur when a solid is heated.

  1. Thermal decomposition
  2. Thermal dissociation
  3. Sublimation
  4. Loss of water of crystallisation

1. Thermal Decompositon

In thermal decomposition, a single compound undergoes decomposition on heating to form two or more simpler compounds or elements. Thermal decomposition is an irreversible reaction.

For example:

ZnCO3 (s)    ----->     ZnO (s) + CO2 (g)

When zinc carbonate is heated it decomposes into zinc oxide and carbon dioxide gas.
A delivery tube is fitted to pass the carbon dioxide gas evolved into limewater.
A white precipitate of calcium carbonate is formed when carbon dioxide reacts with limewater.
