Action of Heat Lab Manual
Essential Observation Skills for
Heating Solids
The appearance of the solid sample
often provides a clue to the detection of the unknown
solid. Therefore it is important to make the following
observations:
| 1. Before heating |
- Preliminary examination of the colour and
texture of the solid.
|
| 2. During heating |
- Observe change in physical state of solid
- Test for gas evolved, give observations and
name gas.
- Observe colour changes in solid
- Observe cooler end of test tube for colourless
liquid droplets or deposits
crystals/solid formed.
- Ensure solid is heated until no further change
for complete reaction.
|
| 3. After Heating |
- Observe the colour and
texture of the residue when hot and when cold.
