Essential Practical Hints for
Heating Solids
- When heating solids, use
a DRY test tube;
- Heat gently at first then
strongly until no further change.
- Always use test tube holder
and wear safety glasses.
- Always read instructions for
the extent of heating e.g. warm gently or heat strongly.
- Be prepared to test for any
gas evolved; always get ready all reagents, indicator
papers, wooden splint, delivery tube etc.
- The test tube should be held
in an almost horizontal position and point its mouth
away from yourself and anyone nearby.
- Be attentive, observant and
concentrate on the heating process.
- Position base of test tube at
the hottest part of the non-luminous Bunsen Flame.
- While heating, move the test
tube from the flame every now and then and shake the
tube gently to distribute the heat.
