Essential Practical Hints for Heating Solids

1. When heating solids, use a DRY test tube;
2. Heat gently at first then strongly until no further change.
3. Always use test tube holder and wear safety glasses.
4. Always read instructions for the extent of heating e.g. warm gently or heat strongly.
5. Be prepared to test for any gas evolved; always get ready all reagents, indicator papers, wooden splint, delivery tube etc.
6. The test tube should be held in an almost horizontal position and point its mouth away from yourself and anyone nearby.
7. Be attentive, observant and concentrate on the heating process.
8. Position base of test tube at the hottest part of the non-luminous Bunsen Flame.
9. While heating, move the test tube from the flame every now and then and shake the tube gently to distribute the heat.
