2. Confirmatory Tests for Gases

c) Test for Chlorine Gas

TEST
Chlorine gas, Cl2

1a) Place 2 spatula of sodium sulphite in a test tube. Add 3 cm3 of dilute hydrochloric acid. Warm gently.

b) Place one drop of acidified potassium dichromate(VI) or acidified potassium manganate(VII) on a piece of filter paper strip. Hold the orange filter paper strip over the mouth of the test tube.

Observations K2Cr2O7 turned from orange to green, or
Purple KMnO4 decolourised.
Type of Chemical reaction involved to test for gas. Redox reaction. Sulphur dioxide is a reducing agent that reduces orange K2Cr2O7 to green Cr3+ ions in solution; and Reduces purple KMnO4 to colourless Mn2+ ions in solution.
