2. Confirmatory Tests for Gases

c) Test for Carbon Dioxide

TEST
Carbon dioxide gas, CO2

1a) Place 2 spatula of calcium carbonate in a test tube. Add 3 cm3 dilute hydrochloric acid.
Warm gently.

b) Using a delivery tube, pass gas produced into a test tube containing 1-2 cm3 of limewater.
Observations Effervescence occurs.
Colourless gas, odourless gas evolved formed white precipitate with limewater.
Type of Chemical reaction involved to test for gas Precipitation
Chemical equation CO2 (g) + Ca(OH)2   ----->     CaCO3 (s) + H2O (l)
               Limewater                white ppt.
