2. Confirmatory Tests for Gases

b) Test for Oxygen

TEST
Oxygen gas, O2

1a) Add a little manganese(IV) oxide to 2 cm3 of hydrogen peroxide in a test tube.

b) Place a lighted splint over the mouth of test tube.

Observations Effervescence occurs.
Colourless, odourless gas evolved rekindles a glowing splint.
Type of Chemical reaction involved Combustion. Oxygen produced supports combustion process.
Chemical equation 2H2 (g) + O2 (g)   ----->     2H2O (l)

TEST
Oxygen gas, O2

1a) Add a little manganese(IV) oxide to 2 cm3 of hydrogen peroxide in a test tube.

b) Insert a glowing splint into the test tube.

Observations Effervescence occurs.
Colourless gas, odourless gas evolved rekindles a glowing splint.
Note: Glowing splint glows brighter when a small amount of oxygen is produced. It is also possible to hear a `pop' sound if there is a lot of oxygen evolved due to rapid combustion.
Type of Chemical reaction involved Combustion. Oxygen produced supports combustion process.
