2. Confirmatory Tests for Gases

a) Test for Hydrogen

TEST
Hydrogen gas, H2

1a) Add dilute hydrochloric acid to a small portion of iron filings.

b) Place a lighted splint over the mouth of test tube.
Observations Effervescence occurred.
Colourless, odourless gas evolved extinguished lighted splint with a `pop' sound.
Type of Chemical reaction used to test for the gas Combustion of hydrogen
Chemical equation 2H2 (g) + O2 (g)   ----->     2H2O (l)
