c) In the case of ammonium ion, NH4+, no precipitate is formed with aqueous sodium hydroxide. However, when the mixture of ammonium ions and sodium hydroxide is warmed gently, ammonia gas is liberated

NH4+ (aq) ion

a) Add NaOH (aq) until no further change is observed.

b) Heat the mixture.

Observation

a) Solution remained colourless.

b) Pungent, colourless gas evolved turned moist red litmus blue. Ammonia gas evolved.
