b) Metal hydroxides as Al(OH)3 , Zn(OH)2, and Pb(OH)2 are amphoteric in nature.
They react with excess sodium hydroxide to form complex salts that are soluble
to form colourless solutions.

Zn2+ (aq) ion
Add NaOH(aq) until no further change is observed.
Observation White precipitate, dissolved in excess NaOH to form a colourless solution.
Name and formula of precipitate Zinc hydroxide, Zn(OH)2
Type of chemical reaction(s)

1. Precipitation of Zn(OH)2

2. Formation of complex salt solution, i.e. Zn(OH)2 reacts with excess NaOH to form a soluble salt.

Ionic equation Zn2+ (aq) + 2OH- (aq) --> Zn(OH)2 (s)
