Experiment 6: To identify a solid sample of carbonate using dilute acids.

Place 2 spatula full of calcium carbonate into a test tube. Add 2 cm3 of dilute hydrochloric acid.

Using a delivery tube pass any gas produced into another test-tube containing 1-2 cm3 of limewater.

Observation

Effervescence occur.
Colourless, odourless gas evolved formed a white ppt. with limewater. Carbon dioxide gas evolved.

Identity of gas evolved carbon dioxide gas
Type of chemical reaction

Action of acid on carbonate

Chemical equation CaCO3 (s)  + 2HCl (aq)  --->  CaCl2 (aq) + CO2 (g) + H2O (l)
