3. Aqueous Lead(II) Nitrate in Qualitative Analysis

Lead(II) nitrate is used to precipitate insoluble lead(II) salts in the identification of anions. Chloride, sulphate and carbonate ions combine with lead(II) ions to form white precipitates while iodide ions combine with lead(II) ions to form a yellow precipitate.

Experiment 3: To identify aqueous solutions containing chloride ions and iodide ions using lead(II) nitrate solution.
Cl- (aq) ion
I- (aq) ion

Place 2 cm3 of each sample solution in a test tube. Add an equal volume of dilute nitric acid followed by a few drops of lead(II) nitrate.

Identity of precipitate formed Lead(II) chloride, PbCl2

Lead(II) iodide, PbI2

Type of chemical reaction Precipitation Precipitation
Ionic equation Pb2+ (aq) + 2Cl- (aq)
