2. Aqueous Barium Nitrate in Qualitative Analysis

c) Test For Carbonate ion, CO32-(aq)

Barium ions also react with carbonate ions in solution to form a white precipitate of barium carbonate, which also dissolves in dilute nitric or dilute hydrochloric acid to form a colourless solution. However, carbon dioxide is liberated instead of sulphur dioxide gas. When passed into limewater, carbon dioxide forms a white precipitate of CaCO3 with limewater.

Ba2+ (aq) + CO32- (aq)     ----->    BaCO3 (s)

BaCO3 (s) + 2H+ (aq)     ----->    Ba2+ (aq) + CO2 (g) + H2O (l)
