2. Aqueous Barium Nitrate
in Qualitative Analysis
c) Test For Carbonate ion, CO32-(aq)
Barium ions also react with carbonate
ions in solution to form a white precipitate of barium
carbonate, which also dissolves in dilute nitric or
dilute hydrochloric acid to form a colourless solution.
However, carbon dioxide is liberated instead of sulphur
dioxide gas. When passed into limewater, carbon dioxide
forms a white precipitate of CaCO3
with limewater.
Ba2+ (aq) + CO32-
(aq) -----> BaCO3 (s)
BaCO3 (s) + 2H+
(aq) -----> Ba2+ (aq)
+ CO2 (g) + H2O (l)
