2. Aqueous Barium Nitrate in Qualitative Analysis

a) Test For Sulphate ion, SO₄^2-(aq)

Both barium chloride and barium nitrate solutions are used to detect anions that form insoluble barium salts.

Ba²⁺ (aq) + SO₄^2- (aq)     ----->    BaSO₄ (s)

It is important to note that dilute sulphuric acid cannot be used as it introduces sulphate ions that interfere with the test.
