Acid-base Reactions

Action of Dilute Alkalis in Qualitative Analysis

In qualitative analysis, dilute acids are commonly used for the following purpose:
Purpose of adding dilute alkali
Type of Chemical Reaction involved
1. To remove hydrogen ions in solution Neutralisation
2. To detect the presence of an ammonium salt Displacement reaction
3. To detect cations that form insoluble metal hydroxides Precipitation
4. To detect certain cations that by reacting with their metal hydroxides to form soluble complex ions or salts Complex ion formation
