Acid-base Reactions

Action of Dilute Acids in Qualitative Analysis

Dilute acids are commonly used for the following purposes:
Purpose of adding dilute acid
Type of Chemical Reaction involved
1. To remove hydroxide ions in solution Neutralisation
2. To detect the presence of a base Acid-Base reaction
3. To detect solid carbonate or carbonate ions Acid-Base reaction
4. To detect cations that form insoluble metal chlorides and metal sulphates Precipitation
