Acid-base Reactions
Acid-base and Neutralisation Reaction
An acid is a substance that produces
hydrogen ions when dissolved in water.
Common acids in the laboratory are
dilute hydrochloric acid, dilute nitric acid and dilute
sulphuric acid.
A base is a substance that reacts
with acids to produce a salt and water. Most are bases.
An alkali is a substance that dissolves
in water to produce hydroxide ions. An alkali is usually
a soluble base.
Common alkalis in the laboratory
are sodium hydroxide solution, potassium hydroxide solution
and aqueous ammonia.
